Knights midget tourney off and running

OTTAWA, August 7, 2009 - Local teams had a win, a tie and a loss Friday to open the 18-team Ottawa Knights National Capital Elite 16U baseball tournament.

The host 16U Knights tied Georgetown 8-8, while the Brockville Bunnies opened with an explosive 16-1 win over the Montreal Orioles and the 15U Knights were beaten 12-1 by Brampton.

For the 16U Knights, Pat Hill delivered a clutch two-run single in the final inning to cap an Ottawa rally and earn the tie. Pat Medeiros and Dillon James scored on the play.

Pitcher Casey Floyd went five strong innings, with relief from David Bell and Landen Moore, but they were stuck with no decisions as the Knights defence made several key errors behind them.

One defensive highlight was a great catch in rightfield by Jamie Wilcox, who then doubled a runner off first base.

The tournament continues Saturday at Kinsman Fields (Terry Fox Dr.), Lytle Park (Fallowfield at Hwy. 416) and Hamilton Yard (Nepean Sportsplex). Games in the 18-team event, which features teams from across Ontario, Quebec and New York State, begin at 9 a.m and continue through 9 p.m. The playoffs go Sunday, with semis at noon and the final at 3 p.m., at Kinsmen Fields.

Admission is free to all games.
